Samuel Vaughan
Samuel Vaughan, a student at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, has a unique family history of Catholic education in the Rockhampton Diocese. This history holds a rich connection to the vision and light cast from Nano Nagle’s flame as Samuel is the fifth generation of his family to attend a Catholic school, inspired by the Presentation Sisters in Queensland. He is also the fourth generation of his family to receive Catholic education on the Capricorn Coast.
Samuel’s great, great grandmother, Ethal Setter, was taught by the Presentation Sisters in Longreach. His great grandfather, Rodney Flanagan, also attended this same school until in 1945 he enrolled in Grade 4 at St Joseph’s School, Yeppoon.
Samuel’s grandmother, Karen Flanagan, and his mother, Ainsley Vaughan (nee Profke), both attended St Ursula’s College and Sam’s uncle, Jason Profke, attended both Sacred Heart School and St Brendan’s College.
Samuel and his sister Grace are now part of the continuing journey of Catholic education as students at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
The Journey Continues
As the first bell rang out at St Joseph’s School in 1917 no one could have foreseen the growth and changes in Catholic education on the Capricorn Coast over the years. Hardships, challenges, joys and sorrows have been shared, and the hopes and dreams of the people have forged a journey that has led us to where we stand today.
The dream of Nano Nagle’s that was ignited 100 years ago in Yeppoon, continues to light our way and beckons us to take this flame of love to others into the future.
With Jesus as our companion
we honour the past,
we enrich the present,
and
we shape the future
as we continue our journey of love together.
