2008 New Names for Sports House Teams

Current names of sports house teams - Border, Freeman, Norman and Riley - did not recognise our Catholic traditions and no long held significance of identification with the current student body and this disparity would only increase with time. The area surrounding the current site of Sacred Heart School and Church was originally owned by the Church.  When the application for development was submitted to Council, all nominated street names were chosen from biblical place names under the guidance of Fr Noel Milner. Cana, Jordan and Tabor were several names submitted.

  •  Cana              Place of Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine

  •  Jordan           River in which Jesus was baptised and the waters were miraculously divided, revealing the riverbed

  •  Tabor              Possible mountain site of the transfiguration

  •  Galilee           The Risen Lord appeared at sunrise to the fishermen on the Lake of Galilee

Celebration Plaque

Caleb Bartlett

Caleb Bartlett began his schooling journey as a 2008 Prep student at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. In 2014 he was in the first Year 6 class to graduate alongside the Year 7’s to high school.

Caleb’s father, Peter Bartlett, an Aboriginal man from the Cape York area, was instrumental in ensuring that the school continued to honour the contribution of indigenous Australians and the richness of their cultures.

Caleb especially remembers NAIDOC celebrations at Sacred Heart School, when the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dancers from St Brendan’s College would dance for the school and tell of the layers of meaning behind their ancient moves. He also proudly read the Acknowledgement of Country at official events, showing respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

Caleb proudly acknowledges his indigenous heritage and is a great ambassador, serving as a school captain and enthusiastically participating in a range of musical, dramatic, academic and sporting endeavours. Caleb is completing his secondary schooling at St Brendan’s College, where alongside his father, Director of Indigenous Education, he continues to be proud of his Aboriginal heritage.

About the Era

This was an era of increasing acknowledgement of the need to forge deeper understanding and appreciation of indigenous Australians and their cultures.

On 13 February 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made a formal apology to Australia’s Indigenous peoples, for the hurts of the past.

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School created a Reconciliation Action Plan that aimed to incorporate a spirit of reconciliation into all aspects of educational activities. The Acknowledgement of Country became a feature of formal events and the Australian Aboriginal Flag took its place alongside the Australian National Flag at the weekly singing of the National Anthem. NAIDOC Week became a major focus, with staff and students enjoying the annual visit by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dancers from St Brendan’s.

The mining boom in Central Queensland contributed to increased population growth on the Capricorn Coast. In 2008 the enrolment number at Sacred Heart School reached 615 students with three classes for each year level. This number included a fourth class of Prep students who intended to enrol at a new Catholic primary school being built on the coast.

On the 27th January 2009, St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, was proudly opened at Pacific Heights, Yeppoon. A new partnership in Catholic Education on the Capricorn Coast had begun.

Prep replaced Preschool in 2007 and at the end of 2014, both Years 6 and 7 students graduated from primary schools throughout Queensland. From that time onwards Year 7 became part of secondary education.
