Louise Effeney
Louise Effeney was five years old when she began her journey of Catholic education at Sacred Heart Primary School. In Year 7 she was school captain, and by the time she graduated she had witnessed many innovations.
This era was one of rapid change with the growth of technologies for teaching and learning. The Sacred Heart Computer Room was opened in 1997 and laptops, servers, internet, cabling, wireless and networking quickly became part of the educational landscape. Louise remembers excitedly going to the school’s computer room with her class each week. A school website was developed and interactive whiteboards replaced blackboards and overhead projectors.
Dedication to the mission of Catholic education runs deeply in Louise’s family. Her father, Mark Effeney, was the Principal of Sacred Heart Primary School during this time of growth, and his leadership saw the school well placed to embrace 21st century learning. Louise’s aunt, Mary Schick, was a teacher at Sacred Heart then later succeeded Mark Effeney as Principal. Louise’s mother, Anne Effeney, is a well regarded Catholic school teacher on the Capricorn Coast.
After completing her schooling at St Ursula’s College, Louise became a teacher and joined the mission of bringing Catholic education to life in the hearts and minds of students in the Diocese of Rockhampton.
About the Era
This era was one of rapid growth and modernisation for the school.
Enrolment numbers continued to increase and the school grew from two stream to three stream. Additional classrooms were built and the library and administration buildings extended. A dedicated computer room was opened, providing the opportunity for whole classes to work with computers one to one.
The number of computers and laptops in classrooms also increased as new ways of learning in a digital age emerged.
A school labyrinth and Sacred Site were created to provide students with a diverse range of opportunities to develop their spirituality and relationship with God.
The Outside School Hours Care Service was a welcome addition for working families.
The first classrooms were air-conditioned, providing relief during the long summer months, and a new playground installed with the assistance of many parent helpers.
Other changes included a new school mission statement, logo, motto and uniform. A notable difference was the transition for girls from the checked school dress to shirt and skorts, to allow greater flexibility in movement and play.
In 2006, the first Challenge Cup, an inter-Catholic school netball and rugby league carnival, was hosted by Sacred Heart School at St Brendan’s College. The Challenge Cup has become a notable annual event with every primary school in the diocese now participating.
This was an exciting era that saw Sacred Heart Primary School continuing the journey of love in a dynamic and contemporary world.
