Noel Milner
Noel Milner, a country boy, came from Springsure to board at St Brendan’s College in 1955. It was here that he made the decision to give his life in service as a priest. He completed his training and served in many towns in the Rockhampton Diocese before being appointed Parish Priest at the Capricorn Coast Parish, a position he held from 1986 to 1997.
Sacred Heart School, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and presbytery were all located in John Street, but as Yeppoon and the parish continued to grow, Fr Milner helped make plans to find a new location. The parish voted and Fr Milner proudly turned the sod at the Lammermoor Beach school site.
In 1991, with assistance from the Rockhampton Diocese, the Rockhampton Catholic Education Office and the families of Capricorn Coast Parish, the new school was proudly opened.
The John St school bell rang out for the last time at 3:00pm on Friday, 1st March, 1991. People came in their utes, trucks and cars, transporting tables, chairs, books and resources across town. On Monday morning the 4th March, the new school bell sounded and the excited students began classes at Sacred Heart Primary School, Lammermoor.
Fr Milner was also integral in the relocation of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and presbytery to Lammermoor, where the wonderful ocean and island views were a constant reminder of the wonders of God’s creation.
Like so many priests of the Rockhampton Diocese, Father Milner provided years of faithful service and sacrifice to ensure that Catholic education could be provided to all who sought its values.
About the Era
The large area of land owned by the Catholic Church at Lammermoor Beach was subdivided and a suitable location for a new Catholic school and church were designated. Other sections of land were subdivided for housing estates.
Sacred Heart Primary School was opened at Lammermoor Beach in 1991 and in 1995, the new Catholic Church and presbytery were opened in Tabor Drive.
The opening of the new school coincided with the commencement of Preschool in Queensland and the first Preschool students started at Sacred Heart Primary School in 1991.
Enrolments at the new school continued to increase and additional classrooms were added as the school grew to having two classes for each grade level.
The previous school building in John Street was demolished to make way for the current Yeppoon Saint Vincent de Paul building. The Livingstone Shire Council took over the remaining buildings with the double storey school building and old presbytery becoming community centres, and the old Sacred Heart Church becoming the Yeppoon Town Library.
